Lieutenant Colonel John K. Rieth, USA
(ret.), is the author of Patton's Forward Observers: History of the 7th Field Artillery Observation Battalion,
XX Corps, Third Army. According to the book description, it “presents the classic American
Army experience of WWII—the friendships, courage, terror, carnage, humor and ultimate victory that is all part of the
Patton legend—a legend built by the soldiers. Author Lt. Col. (U.S. Army, ret.) Reith began his search for the story
of the 7th FAOB soon after his father’s death. His search put him in touch with the men who had fought beside his father,
and resulted in a book that tells the story of premier field artillery observers of General George S. Patton. Fusing their
first-hand accounts with official records, his father’s own letters, and other published works, Reith created Patton’s
Forward Observers.”
