In the Line of Duty
An assistant police chief with 27 years of law
enforcement experience was shot and killed on
an Arkansas highway after stopping a suspected
stolen vehicle. A 30-year-old U.S. Border
Patrol agent was shot multiple times while on
patrol near San Diego. A patrol officer in
Pennsylvania awaiting backup was ambushed in
his police cruiser after responding to a 9-1-1
call. These three officers, who paid the
ultimate price for their desire to serve and
protect the public, are just three of the 48
law enforcement officers from around the nation
who lost their lives in the line of duty during
2009.

U.S-Turkish Alliance in Good Shape, Gates
Says
The U.S.-Turkey alliance is built on
fundamental common interests, and the defense
partnership between the two nations is as close
as it has ever been, Defense Secretary Robert
M. Gates said here today. Gates was the keynote
speaker at the American Turkish Council
Convention at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The
United States and Turkey are allies that have
fought together in Korea, Kosovo and Kabul, and
remain allies even when they disagree, he said.

Flight to the Ice [Dispatches from
Antarctica]
…After check-in and security screening
conducted by members of the New Zealand Defence
Force, we boarded the C-17 Globemaster III. The
Commander, Joint Task Force – Support Forces
Antarctica, Lt Gen Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle (my
boss’s boss), would travel roundtrip with us on
today’s mission to mark the start of the
austral summer season “main body.” Last month,
C-17 maintenance and aircrew completed the
first night-vision-goggle (NVG) passenger and
cargo missions into Antarctica as part of the
so-called WINFLY period.
