Colonel Charles W. Hostler, USAF (ret.) “was the U.S. ambassador to Bahrain, 1989-93. From 1976 to 1977, he was regional vice president, Middle East and Africa, for E-Systems, Incorporated, based in Cairo. Prior to that, Colonel Charles W. Hostler had a two-year assignment as both the deputy assistant secretary for international commerce and the director of the Bureau of International Commerce for the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also served as the director of international operations, Middle East and North Africa, for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation 1963-69. Dr. Charles W. Hostler received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University.

Charles W. Hostler is the author of Soldier to Ambassador: From the D-Day Normandy Landing to the Persian Gulf War; Turkism and the Soviets: The Turks of the World and Their Political Objectives; and, The Turks of Central Asia.

According to the book description The Turks of Central Asia, “This is a pioneering study which presents carefully researched data on the some 55 million Turkish-speaking peoples of the former Soviet Union and Central Asia. The historical background of and the recent developments in Central Asia and the Trans-Caucasus are presented in detail. Hostler's conclusions emphasize the present instability and the importance of Central Asia as well as the competing roles of Turkey, Iran, Russia and other countries. This unique book follows a standard, traditional historical approach. Central Asia is a vast, little-understood area of great strategic, political, military, and economic importance, which could be a source of future world instability. Scholars and policymakers will be interested in this source of updated and factual information about a little-known area of increasing significance.”

According to one reader of Soldier to Ambassador: From the D-Day Normandy Landing to the Persian Gulf War, “This is a well written auto-biography of Dr. Charles Hostler who was the U.S. Ambassador to the State of Bahrain. Charles comes from humble origins and after serving in the US military and being part of the CIA eventually becomes an Ambassador. Charles is a kind, humble philanthropist and a personal friend. I have recommended or donated this book to various friends who were most impressed by his story. It is a wonderfully written book and an easy read because of its interesting content.”

The MOAA said of Soldier to Ambassador: From the D-Day Normandy Landing to the Persian Gulf War, “This fascinating memoir charts Hostler’s remarkable life that lead from his family’s early difficult status through the hard times of the Great Depression to peak in an ambassadorship to the Gulf Kingdom of Bahrain. Recipient of many decorations (from nine countries), awards, honors, and titles, Hostler reviews a life rich in military and diplomatic service, travel, knowledge of cultures, and relationships that span the gamut from soldiers in many wars to kings, religious dignitaries, presidents, prime ministers, and scholars.”
